BODRUM_Existence in Mobility_Port Terminal

For our final semester, we are designing a cruise boat and ferry terminal in Bodrum. Our project is about “mobility” in all kinds and we are focusing on especially the human mobility. Since there is the condition of refugees, who are mobile all the time, we are considering the port as a point in the mobility.

You can find the site analysis and my initial design concept below.

Zoning_Program Layers

The zoning of the plot will help me for programs. They will act like program layers and in the middle all of the programs can interact and create an interaction zone. By this way also, the programs assigned to us will interact, connect and combine with each other.

City Living Room

As you know from the previous post, since I want my city living room to be a part of the green/park network and collect people I tried how will it work if there were all trees, all people and both in the plot. Then from my analysis of the existing parks in the network I see that Kuğulu park and Seğmenler Parkı collects people the most and it is because of their topography. So I tried the same with changing the topography of our plot.

Green Network

The green areas on the boulevard is where the interaction is highest. and where it is integrated with the boulevard, these points are nodes.

There are several green points throughout the boulevard. The boulevard connects them into a network and acts like a spine.

The plot is going to be a point in the network, connected by Atatürk Boulevard. It is going to be a destination, not a passage. It will collect people.

In the second image you can see the abstract map of the green/park network and their characterstics and important elements that shape these parks and our plot for city living room.

Assignment2.1 – ZOOM OUT

This semester our plot for construction area is in Atatürk Boulevard. So we started with some lectures about the evaluation of the boulevard throughout the years from the times is was first designed to today. And we started our analyses on the boulevard with a more zoomed out scope.

We started with just one part of the boulevard from kızılay Kuğulu park.

MapI first started with the definition of the boulevard and i see that Atatürk Boulaverd today does not contain the 3 main elements and necessities it should contain to be a boulevard. Then i started to analyse the basic traffic and movement in the boulevard and its impact area and made some diagrams which you can see in the below.

Pafta3

And from these analysis, diagrams and segments, I analysed the real sections in the segment the interaction between the two sides of the boulevard. according to my analysis I draw an interaction diagram, where the block is higher, the interaction increases.

According to these readings this is my conceptual site model. I made it with sectioning. The height of the sections change in relevance with the interaction diagram and the lenght of the sections change according to leakages.

New in Old – From Past to Present

We went to a trip in İstanbul last weekend with our faculty and junior class students from METU. We were able to see some examples of building new in the old. İstanbul is a multi layered city in architectural sense, you can see lots of different examples from different cultures and from different times. We asked to comment on the new in old as we were travelling. Building new in old is an eventual thing. However, it sholud be done without giving harm to the old and its characteristics. It sholud be understood when you look at it that it is an addition and that its not built at the same time. When the building built as it was built many years ago it mislead people. Also there are buildings that are so alien to their surrounding that you understand that the architect want that building to be alien and to be differnet. In İstanbul there are pretty good examples of “new in old”, however, there are also examples which harm the quality and characteristics of the city. Here are some examples that i choose from İstiklal street.

“City Image Elements”

For this weeks arch121 assignment we read a chapter from “The City Image and Its Elements”-Image of the City by Kevin Lynch. As you can guess from its title the reading was about the elements of cities. The author , Lynch, described a cities identity, its elements in 5 parts. He considered them as 1.Paths, 2.Edges, 3.Districts, 4.Nodes and 5.Landmarks. As an assignment we asked to find examples for them in our city; Ankara. So here are the examples.

Path : Atatürk Bulvarı

Node : Kuğulu Park

Edge : Kurtuluş Parkı

Landmark : Anıtkabir
